Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 40 and 85 years old (male or female)
- You have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis (a type of joint wear and tear) in the joint at the base of your thumb, confirmed by an X-ray or ultrasound
- An ultrasound has shown inflammation in that thumb joint
- You have pain of at least 3 out of 10 in that thumb joint, both at rest and during activity, measured at two separate appointments
- The trial doctor has assessed you as suitable to receive the study medication (Kenacort-T, a steroid injection)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have worn a thumb splint most days, or done structured hand exercises, in the last 12 weeks
- You have had a steroid or other injection into that thumb joint in the last 12 weeks
- You have had more than 3 previous steroid injections into that thumb joint
- You have used steroid tablets, steroid injections into a muscle, or steroid drips in the last 12 weeks
- You have had surgery on that thumb joint in the past
- You are planning to have hand surgery in the next 24 weeks
- You are unwilling to stop using anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, or etoricoxib) on your hands during the study
- You have a condition that causes widespread joint inflammation (such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or gout), or another condition that could better explain your hand pain (confirm with trial site)
- You have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (a condition causing widespread pain)
- You have been diagnosed with psoriasis (a skin condition)
- You have an infection, skin disease, or wound near the thumb joint where the injection would be given
- You have serious other health conditions, memory or thinking problems, or issues with alcohol or substance use that might make it hard to follow the study rules
- You have a severe or uncontrolled infection
- You are known to be allergic to the study medication (Triamcinolone acetonide/Kenacort) or any of its ingredients
- You are currently taking part in another clinical trial
- You are taking a type of heart medication called digitalis glycosides
- You have received a live vaccine in the last 2 weeks
- You are not able to speak or understand Norwegian
- You are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the next 6 months
- The trial doctor has any other concern that you may not be able to follow the study procedures (confirm with trial site)
