Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older, of any gender
- People who have been confirmed through biopsy or cell testing to have squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of cancer) of the esophagus (the food pipe), either at an advanced stage (Stage IVb) or that has come back after previous treatment such as surgery or radiotherapy — though if it has come back, the return of the cancer must not be in the same area that was previously treated with radiotherapy
- People who are generally well enough to carry out light activity and care for themselves, as measured by a standard health scale (score of 0 or 1); people aged 65 and over also need to complete an additional health and wellbeing assessment with a satisfactory result
- People whose routine blood tests and liver and kidney function tests show no significant abnormalities
- People whose cancer has responded to 2 to 4 cycles of first-line chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy (meaning the initial treatment has shown some benefit)
- People whose expected survival is more than 12 weeks
- People who have given written informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had another type of cancer in the past, with the exception of certain non-invasive or non-serious skin cancers, non-cancerous skin conditions, early-stage cervical cancer in situ, or early-stage hypopharyngeal cancer in situ
- People who have received surgery (other than a stoma procedure), chemotherapy, or other anti-cancer treatments before enrolling in the trial
- People who currently have an active infection, or who have had a heart attack, stroke, or gastrointestinal, neurological, or heart/lung surgery within the 6 months before joining the trial
- People with a history of allergy to chemotherapy drugs or a history of autoimmune disease
- People who are currently participating in another clinical trial, or who have done so within the 4 weeks before enrolling
- People for whom a radiation oncologist has determined that radiotherapy cannot be safely given — for example, due to a high risk of developing an abnormal opening (fistula) or other safety concerns
