Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older, of any gender
- People who have been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (a specific type of esophageal cancer), confirmed through a tissue or cell sample, at an advanced stage (Stage IVb) with cancer that has spread to no more than 2 other areas of the body (including lymph nodes)
- People who are generally well enough to carry out daily activities, as measured by a standard medical scoring tool (a score of 0 or 1 on the ECOG scale); people aged 65 and over also need to complete a geriatric health assessment showing good overall health
- People whose routine blood tests and liver and kidney function results show no significant abnormalities
- People who have not previously had radiation treatment to the chest area
- People whose doctors expect them to live for more than 12 weeks
- People who have given their written informed consent to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a history of another type of cancer, except for certain non-invasive or non-melanoma skin cancers, a specific type of throat cancer (hypopharyngeal carcinoma in situ), or cervical carcinoma in situ
- People who have already had surgery (other than a stoma/ostomy procedure), chemotherapy, or any other cancer treatment before joining the trial
- People who currently have an active infection, or who have had a heart attack, stroke, or surgery on the stomach, gut, nervous system, heart, or lungs within the 6 months before joining the trial
- People with a known allergy to chemotherapy drugs, or who have a history of autoimmune disease
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial, or who have done so within the 4 weeks before joining
- People for whom a radiation oncologist has determined that radiation therapy cannot be safely given — for example, due to a high risk of developing an abnormal opening (fistula) in the body
