Who might be able to join this trial:
- A signed consent form has been provided by the patient or, if the patient is unable to consent, by their next of kin
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who had an ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel) with symptoms starting within 48 hours before arriving at hospital
- People whose stroke symptoms either lasted 24 hours or longer, or whose stroke was confirmed by a brain scan (CT or MRI)
- People whose blood test showed a D-dimer level of 820 μg/L or higher, measured after the stroke and within 24 hours of arriving at hospital (D-dimer is a protein fragment found in the blood that can indicate clotting activity)
- People diagnosed with an "embolic stroke of unknown source" (a stroke caused by a clot where no clear cause has been found) after completing initial tests — including brain imaging, a heart tracing (ECG), at least 24 hours of heart monitoring, and a heart ultrasound
Who may not be able to join:
- People with active cancer at the time of the stroke — this includes cancer diagnosed in the past six months, cancer that has returned or spread, cancer treated within the past six months, or blood cancers not in full remission for more than five years (people with a past cancer history that no longer meets this definition may still be eligible, confirm with trial site)
- People who received clot-dissolving medication (given through a drip) before the D-dimer blood test was taken
- People newly diagnosed with a cancer affecting the brain or nervous system
- People, or their next of kin, who are considered unlikely to be available or able to participate in follow-up interviews for the study
