Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are an adult who has been admitted to the emergency department with a flare-up of COPD (a lung condition that makes breathing difficult)
- You are able to understand the study information and agree to take part
- You are covered by social security (health insurance/social coverage)
- Your flare-up has been identified based on your medical history, a physical examination, and a chest X-ray
- You are experiencing serious breathing difficulty, shown by breathing very fast (25 breaths per minute or more) and/or visible signs of struggling to breathe (such as using neck or shoulder muscles to breathe, or unusual stomach movements)
- A blood test from an artery has shown that your blood has too much carbon dioxide and is more acidic than normal, meaning your body is struggling to control your breathing
Who may not be able to join:
- You have already received breathing support through a face mask (called non-invasive ventilation, or NIV) before entering the study — whether in hospital or before arriving — not counting any mask-based breathing support you use regularly at home
- You have a medical reason why breathing support through a face mask would not be safe or suitable for you (confirm with trial site)
- You are unable to cooperate, are very agitated, or are unwilling to use the breathing mask
