Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who had a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel, with symptoms starting within the last 4 weeks
- People whose stroke has been rated as "moderate to severe" using a standard medical stroke scale (a score of 6–24 on the NIHSS) at the time of joining the trial
- People who are not eligible for clot-busting medication or a procedure to remove the clot
- People (or their next-of-kin) who are able to provide written consent to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are medically unstable, such as those with unstable heart or blood pressure, or whose overall health condition is getting worse
- People whose stroke was a "mini-stroke" (also called a TIA), where symptoms went away on their own
- People who have been diagnosed with cancer (past or present) or a blood disorder
- People with significant kidney problems, based on specific blood test results (confirm with trial site)
- People with significant liver problems, based on specific blood test results showing liver enzyme levels more than twice the normal range (confirm with trial site)
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People whose brain scans show a bleed in the brain, a tumour, an abscess, abnormal blood vessels, severe brain shrinkage, or other non-stroke brain conditions
- People who have been diagnosed with, or are suspected of having, a serious heart condition involving blocked heart arteries (acute coronary syndrome)
- People with heart failure
- People with a history of confirmed or suspected blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) or a chronic lung condition called COPD
- People with mental health, thinking, or psychological difficulties that may affect their ability to understand the study or attend follow-up appointments
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial, or who have taken part in one in the past 3 months
