Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged 18 or older
• People diagnosed with severe emphysema who have a certain number of treatable airway areas in one lung, as measured by a specialised CT scan
• People who have not smoked for at least 2 months before joining, and who are willing to remain smoke-free for the entire duration of the study
• People whose lung function test results fall within a specific range — broadly, lungs that are significantly over-inflated and with limited airflow (confirm exact values with trial site)

• People who are mentally and physically able to take part in the study procedures and who are able to give written informed consent

Who may not be able to join:

• People with certain heart conditions, such as a heart attack in the past month, unstable heart disease, poor heart pumping function, dangerous irregular heartbeats, or severe high blood pressure in the lungs
• People who have been coughing up blood, have blood clotting problems, or are in a state of serious overall physical collapse
• People with certain other illnesses or taking certain medications that could raise the risk of complications — for example, immune system disorders, medicines that suppress the immune system, bleeding disorders, unstable heart conditions, a history of asthma, or a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
• People who have used morphine-based medicines within 4 weeks before the screening visit
• People taking more than 10 mg of prednisolone (or an equivalent steroid medicine) daily at the time of screening
• People who have had a flare-up of their lung condition (COPD exacerbation) in the 6 weeks before joining
• People whose emphysema is severely spread across both the upper and lower parts of the opposite lung, based on CT scan measurements
• People who have a single very large air pocket (bulla) in the target lung area, or a specific pattern of emphysema along the edges of the lung
• People with signs of an active infection, such as fever or an elevated white blood cell count
• People who have previously had a heart or lung transplant, lung volume reduction surgery, chest surgery involving removal of lung tissue, or previous procedures to reduce lung volume using valves, coils, or stents
• People with lung nodules that a specialist considers highly likely to be cancerous
• People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
• People currently enrolled in another clinical trial that has not yet completed its required follow-up period
• People who the trial investigators consider unsuitable for any other reason
