Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have had a stroke, mini-stroke (TIA), or a blood clot in another organ or body system that is linked to a hole in the heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO)
  • People whose heart has been confirmed by ultrasound to have this hole (PFO) present
  • People aged 18 or older
  • People with a life expectancy of at least one year
  • People who have agreed and signed a consent form for a procedure to close the hole in the heart using a minimally invasive (endovascular) method

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are unable to take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications known as antiplatelet therapy
  • People who currently have an acute (active) inflammatory disease or infection
  • People who are within 30 days of having had a stroke
  • People who have had a heart attack or open-heart bypass surgery within the past 30 days
  • People who have a tear in one of the arteries supplying the brain (carotid or vertebral artery dissection)
  • People with serious heart valve problems
  • People who have blood clots present inside the chambers of the heart
  • People who do not wish to participate in the study
