Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are over 40 years old
  • People who are able to give informed consent (agree to participate after being fully informed)
  • People who have had knee pain caused by osteoarthritis for at least 6 months
  • People whose knee pain has not improved enough with treatments such as medication, physical therapy, or changing their activity levels, for at least 3 months, and who are seeking a total knee replacement
  • People who are considered a candidate for a total knee replacement at Hotel Dieu Hospital
  • People who are able to attend all required follow-up visits and complete all parts of the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who currently have an active infection in or near the affected area
  • People who have a condition where the immune system attacks the body, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or other autoimmune diseases
  • People who are currently taking medication that suppresses the immune system
  • People who have known blood vessel disease in their legs, or leg symptoms believed to be caused by poor blood circulation (such as pain when walking or pain at rest)
  • People who have a blood clotting disorder that cannot be reversed
  • People whose kidneys are not functioning well enough, based on a specific blood test result taken within the past 60 days (confirm with trial site)
  • People who cannot safely have an MRI scan — for example, due to claustrophobia, or having metal fragments, implants, or prostheses in their body
  • People who have had a severe allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis) to the contrast dye used in CT or MRI scans
  • People who are pregnant, or people of childbearing potential who are not currently using a medically accepted form of contraception
