Who might be able to join this trial:

• People diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome who have been on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilator) for at least 48 hours and are having difficulty being weaned off it (meaning they have failed at least one attempt to breathe on their own and may need up to three attempts or up to 7 days to successfully come off the ventilator).
• People aged 18 years or older.
• People of any sex.
• People whose ventilator is set to a specific support mode with oxygen levels at or below 50%, low air pressure settings, and a breathing rate below 25 breaths per minute.
• People who are conscious and aware, with a Glasgow Coma Score of 13 or higher (a measure showing they are alert and oriented).
• People whose level of alertness and sedation falls within a specific target range on a standard sedation scale (Riker Sedation Agitation Score of 4).
• People with blood acid-base balance (pH) above 7.25 and blood oxygen levels above 90%.
• People whose heart and circulation are stable.
• People with a specific level of breathing muscle strength, able to take breaths independently while on the ventilator.

Who may not be able to join:

• People with ongoing, life-threatening heart rhythm problems or acute heart failure causing unstable blood pressure or circulation.
• People experiencing severe difficulty breathing when breathing on their own.
• People with any ongoing or progressive nerve or muscle disease (other than Guillain-Barré syndrome) that is not stable and could interfere with breathing muscle training.
• People with a spinal cord injury.
• People with certain bone or structural problems affecting the chest wall or spine (such as severe curvature of the spine, an unstable chest wall, or spinal implants) that would seriously limit chest movement.
• People who require heavy sedation or medication to paralyse their breathing muscles.
• People experiencing dangerously high air pressure in the airways (a condition that can cause lung injury).
• People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or above (a measure of body weight relative to height).
