Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with COPD:
- People who have been diagnosed with Stage 2 or Stage 3 COPD, based on guidelines set by the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society
- People who have been taking the same medications without any changes for at least the past 4 weeks
For healthy participants:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who do not have any diagnosed chronic (long-term) illness
- People who do not smoke
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have serious other health conditions, unstable heart disease, certain diseases affecting connective tissue, or who need high levels of oxygen therapy (more than 3–4 litres per minute)
- People who have any blood vessel problems in their legs that could affect blood flow or oxygen delivery to the leg muscles
- People who have a lung or breathing condition other than COPD
- People who have had a COPD flare-up (worsening of symptoms) in the last 4 weeks
- People who experience a COPD flare-up while the study is already underway
- People who have fatty tissue or scar tissue at the body sites where measurements would be taken, as this could affect the accuracy of results
- People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the last 30 days that could influence this study's results
