Who might be able to join this trial:

For Aim 1:

  • Adults aged 18–23 who are neurotypical (no neurological conditions) and right-handed

For Aim 2 – neurotypical participants:

  • Neurotypical people of a similar age to the stroke participants in the study
  • People with no musculoskeletal (bone, joint, or muscle) or neurological conditions

For Aim 2 – stroke participants:

  • People who have had a single stroke that affected only one side of the brain (either a blocked blood vessel or a bleed in the brain)
  • People who are in the chronic phase of stroke recovery, meaning it has been more than one year since their stroke
  • People whose stroke occurred after the age of 18
  • People who are able to give informed consent to take part in the study — this includes people with aphasia (communication difficulties after stroke), as long as they have the capacity to consent
  • Right-handed people (for neurotypical participants only)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People under 18 years of age
  • Pregnant women
  • People who are currently in prison
  • Adults who are not able to give their own consent to participate

For Aim 2 – stroke participants only:

  • People with stroke who have received antispastic injections (such as Botox for muscle stiffness) in the past six months
  • People whose stroke affected the brainstem and/or cerebellum (lower and back parts of the brain)
  • People whose stroke was caused by brain surgery
  • People who have hemineglect (a condition where the brain has difficulty paying attention to one side of the body or space)
