Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been clearly diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD) and your doctor has determined you need surgery to remove the area where your small intestine meets your large intestine (called the ileocecal region), done in a single operation
• Your Crohn's disease affects only the end of the small intestine and the start of the large intestine, with the total affected area being less than 80 cm in length
• The area of intestine just above where the surgical join will be made (within about 50 cm) shows no signs of remaining disease
• You (or your legal guardian) are able to understand the study, are willing to take part, can sign a consent form, and are able to follow the study plan

Who may not be able to join:

• You have previously had surgery to remove the ileocecal region of your intestine
• Your Crohn's disease mainly affects other parts of the intestine (such as higher up in the small bowel) and requires surgical removal of areas other than the ileocecal region
• There is a risk that removing intestine could leave you with too little intestine to absorb nutrients properly (sometimes called short bowel syndrome)
• You would need a temporary or permanent opening of the intestine through the abdominal wall (an ileostomy) as part of your surgery
• You have severe disease affecting the area around your back passage (anus and rectum)
• It is expected that you would not be able to take the required medications after surgery
• You are unable to return to the hospital for follow-up check-ups at the required times
• You have had a serious heart or other major health problem in the six months before surgery, such as a heart attack, active chest pain (angina), heart failure, or another condition the study doctor feels puts you at risk
• You have a history of cancer, including melanoma (a type of skin cancer), not including certain minor localised skin cancers
• You have been diagnosed with another autoimmune disease (a condition where the immune system attacks the body) in addition to Crohn's disease, or there is evidence suggesting you may have one
• You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• You are not able to be contacted or assessed at the required points throughout the study

You may be removed from the trial if:

• You cannot be reached for follow-up or you choose to leave the study
• A complication develops at the surgical join site (anastomotic fistula) that makes it impossible to carry out the required camera examinations (confirm with trial site)
• The study doctor decides it is no longer appropriate for you to continue
