Who might be able to join this trial:
- Men between the ages of 45 and 75 years
- People with a life expectancy of more than 10 years at the time of joining the trial
- People who are able to understand the trial and can provide signed, written consent before enrolling or completing any trial-related tests
- People diagnosed with low or intermediate risk prostate cancer that was found using an MRI-ultrasound fusion targeted biopsy
- People whose prostate cancer appears to be contained within the prostate on MRI
- People with a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test result below 20 ng/mL
- People with 1 or 2 visible lesions on MRI, each no larger than 15mm, where the biopsy results show either: a mid-level aggressiveness grade (ISUP grade group 2 or 3), or a lower aggressiveness grade (ISUP grade group 1) with a tumour size of at least 10mm
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are not safe to receive general or spinal anaesthesia
- People who cannot safely have an MRI scan or receive MRI contrast dye — for example, those with reduced kidney function (eGFR below 50 ml/min)
- People with a blood clotting disorder that cannot be corrected
- People taking blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications that cannot be stopped before the procedure (low-dose aspirin of 80–100mg is considered acceptable and does not need to be stopped)
- People who have previously received any treatment for prostate cancer
- People who have previously had radiation therapy to the pelvic area for prostate cancer or any other cancer
- People whose target lesion measures more than 15mm in its longest dimension
- People with any lesion (visible or not visible on MRI) located within 10mm of the rectum or within 10mm of the urinary sphincter
- People with more than 2 areas of prostate cancer, whether or not they are visible on MRI
- People whose biopsy shows a Gleason score of 4+4 or any Gleason pattern 5 cancer (higher aggressiveness grades)
- People whose non-targeted biopsy cores show any Gleason pattern 4 cancer that is not next to the main target lesion (one core of pure Gleason pattern 3 cancer on the opposite side of the prostate is considered acceptable)
- People whose imaging clearly shows cancer that has spread beyond the prostate capsule (prostate capsular contact without definite spread beyond the capsule is considered acceptable)
- People with bladder problems such as bladder stones or bladder cancer
- People with a known narrowing of the urethra (the tube that carries urine)
- People with a suspected or active COVID-19 infection
