For people with ALS (also called PALS):

  • People who have been diagnosed with ALS based on a specific set of standard diagnostic guidelines (known as the revised El Escorial criteria)

  • People who are functionally native, monolingual speakers of American English

For unfamiliar communication partners (a separate group of participants):

  • People who pass a remote hearing screening
  • People who, by their own report, have no known speech, language, or neurological conditions
  • People who are native, monolingual speakers of American English
  • People who have no prior experience communicating with someone who has a speech impairment caused by a neurological condition
  • People between the ages of 18 and 40

Who may not be able to join:
