Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with ALS (also called PALS):

• People who have been diagnosed with ALS based on a specific set of standard diagnostic guidelines (known as the revised El Escorial criteria)
• People who have no history of other neurological conditions, such as stroke
• People who show no signs of cognitive (thinking or memory) impairment, as measured by a telephone-based screening test
• People who have a noticeable change in their speech, as measured by a standard ALS rating scale
• People who are still able to produce single words
• People who are native speakers of American English

For age-matched comparison participants (people without ALS, matched in age to PALS):

• People who pass a remote hearing screening
• People who, by their own report, have no known speech, language, or neurological conditions
• People who show no signs of cognitive impairment, as measured by a telephone-based screening test
• People who are functionally native, monolingual speakers of American English

For unfamiliar communication partners (a separate group of participants):

• People who pass a remote hearing screening
• People who, by their own report, have no known speech, language, or neurological conditions
• People who are native, monolingual speakers of American English
• People who have no prior experience communicating with someone who has a speech impairment caused by a neurological condition
• People between the ages of 18 and 40

Who may not be able to join:

• There are no additional exclusion criteria listed — people who meet the relevant inclusion criteria listed above may be enrolled by the trial site
