Who might be able to join this trial:
- Infants, children, or young people (from birth up to 16 years old) admitted to the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), Glasgow for a planned bronchoscopy or gastrointestinal (gut) camera procedure
- Infants or children attending for a planned or emergency bone/joint operation who do not have any active breathing or gut conditions, and are not being treated for either of those conditions
- Children attending the respiratory (breathing) department at RHC who are able to produce a sputum (mucus/phlegm) sample and are already having a blood test as part of their normal care
- Infants, children, or young people attending RHC for a care appointment related to asthma or wheezing, who are about to start a type of medication called biologics therapy
- Children attending RHC with asthma or wheezing who are not indicated to start biologics therapy
Who may not be able to join:
- Children who have taken antibiotics on the day of their admission, or who have taken antibiotics within the previous month (except those who have been on preventative antibiotics for more than one month)
- Anyone aged 17 years or older
- Children who are known to be infected with, or considered at high risk of having been exposed to, HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C
- Children and/or their parent or guardian who are unable to understand English, where obtaining proper consent would not be possible
- Children with asthma who are already receiving biologics therapy (unless they are being enrolled through the bronchoscopy route)
