Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are able to understand the study and are willing to sign a written consent form
- People who have been confirmed through laboratory testing to have early-stage breast cancer (stage T1 or T2) or a non-invasive condition called DCIS
- People who have had breast-conserving surgery (where only part of the breast is removed) with clear margins (no cancer cells at the edges) and no cancer found in the lymph nodes
- People whose treatment plan includes breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation to the whole breast using standard radiation techniques (3D-CRT or IMRT)
- People whose treatment plan includes an extra targeted radiation dose (called a boost) to the area where the tumour was removed
- People who are willing and able to follow all study requirements for the full duration of the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had the entire breast on the affected side removed (mastectomy)
- People who do not have a confirmed laboratory diagnosis of breast cancer
- People whose cancer has spread to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body
- People whose radiation treatment plan uses a technique that targets only part of the breast (accelerated partial breast irradiation)
- People who have been diagnosed with another type of cancer (other than certain skin cancers) in the past 5 years
- People who have previously had radiation treatment to the chest area
- People who have a history of cancer in the same breast
- People who are currently receiving certain chemotherapy drugs at the same time as radiation
- People who have an active connective tissue disease, including scleroderma
- People who are unable or unwilling to return for required follow-up visits
