Who might be able to join this trial:
Food allergy only group:
- People who have been diagnosed by an allergist with a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to peanut, tree nut, egg, milk, or sesame.
- People who have had skin prick testing and/or blood allergy testing for the relevant food within the past 6 months, with results meeting a specific threshold that strongly indicates allergy (confirm with trial site for exact values).
- People who have no history of the skin condition atopic dermatitis (also known as eczema).
Food allergy plus atopic dermatitis group:
- People who meet all the food allergy only criteria above, but who also have a diagnosed history of atopic dermatitis.
Atopic dermatitis without food allergy group:
- People who currently have a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis confirmed by an allergist and/or dermatologist.
- People who have no history of food allergy, either now or in the past.
Control group:
- People who have no history of food allergy or atopic dermatitis, either now or in the past.
Who may not be able to join:
- People younger than 10 years of age or older than 55 years of age.
- People with active heart disease, active cancer, lung disease (except well-controlled asthma), or other serious health conditions that would make an oral food challenge (a supervised test where a food is eaten in a clinical setting) unsafe — though mild, well-managed conditions such as controlled high blood pressure may still be acceptable (confirm with trial site).
- People taking certain medications that cannot be safely stopped temporarily before an oral food challenge, including antihistamines (allergy tablets or liquids) taken within the past week.
- People with skin conditions other than atopic dermatitis that may affect the study, such as psoriasis, certain inherited skin conditions, or immune-related skin disorders.
- People who have started or stopped a biologic medication (such as dupilumab or tezepelumab) within the past 6 months.
- People who have previously undergone or are currently undergoing oral immunotherapy (a treatment programme involving gradually eating increasing amounts of a food allergen) for any food.
- People who are pregnant — participants of childbearing age will be asked to self-report their pregnancy status.
