Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
- You have been diagnosed with moderate or severe major depression (without psychotic features), confirmed through a standard psychiatric interview
- You are 18 years old or older
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you are willing to use an acceptable form of contraception (such as the pill or a long-acting contraceptive) during the trial, and you can confirm you are not currently pregnant
- You are able to read and sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- You have ever been diagnosed with drug or alcohol dependence
- You have ever been diagnosed with a personality disorder
- You have ever been diagnosed with any form of dementia
- You have ever been diagnosed with psychosis or schizophrenia
- You have ever been diagnosed with bipolar disorder
- You are currently having thoughts of suicide, based on an assessment by a psychiatrist involved in the study
- You are currently taking mirtazapine, mianserin, trazodone, or a type of antidepressant called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
- You have a medical reason why you should not take mirtazapine (confirm with trial site)
- You have a known allergy to mirtazapine or mianserin
- You are not registered with a GP, or you are not willing to allow the trial team to access your GP records and any psychiatric assessments
- You are currently taking part in another drug trial or psychological therapy trial
- You are currently in hospital being treated for your inflammatory bowel disease
- You are currently taking budesonide or a reducing course of prednisolone for your inflammatory bowel disease
- You are expecting a change to your inflammatory bowel disease treatment within the next 12 weeks
