Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with a stroke or have a traumatic injury and are being cared for by the Trauma & Acute Care Surgery team
• People who currently have medical orders requiring them to drink thickened liquids or have restrictions on what liquids they can have
• People who are able to manage and protect their own airway without the need for any breathing devices or tubes to keep it open

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose treating doctor considers them medically fragile, including those with a diagnosis of sepsis, those needing blood pressure-supporting medications, or those requiring high levels of extra oxygen through specialised devices
• People who refuse mouth care, have tooth decay or dental disease, or have an active infection in their mouth
• People who have a serious progressive neurological condition, active cancer of the head or neck, or a weakened immune system
• People who are on orders to stay in bed and not get up
• People who are drowsy, difficult to rouse, or sedated
• People where there is a suspicion that they may have inhaled food or liquid into their lungs before arriving at the hospital, or who show signs of resulting lung irritation
• People who have a fever with no known cause
• People who have a history of repeatedly inhaling food or liquid into their lungs causing pneumonia or lung inflammation
• People whose primary language is one for which the trial's questionnaires have not been formally validated (confirm with trial site)
