Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are 18 years of age or older (men and women are both welcome)
• You have been diagnosed with mild or moderate ulcerative colitis (UC), confirmed by a camera examination of the bowel (endoscopy)
• You are currently being treated with a medication called mesalamine (also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid)

Who may not be able to join:

• You have severe ulcerative colitis
• You have significant problems with your liver or kidney function
• You have diabetes
• You have colorectal (bowel) cancer
• You are using steroid medications, either as a suppository/enema or taken by mouth or injection
• You are taking medications that suppress the immune system or biological therapies
• You have an addiction to alcohol or drugs
• You have a known allergy to any of the medications being studied in this trial
• You have had surgery to remove all or part of your large bowel (colon)
• You have heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or any history of heart disease including angina or heart attack
• You have another inflammatory condition or an active infection
• You have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or severe obesity (confirm with trial site)
• You have a liver disease
• You have low platelet or low white blood cell counts (confirm with trial site)
• You have any type of seizures or epilepsy
• You have kidney disease
• You have a blood clotting disorder
• You are currently taking a medication called metronidazole (an antibiotic)
• You have a known allergy to mebendazole, albendazole, or related medications called benzimidazoles
• You are currently taking antioxidant supplements or medications
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding
• You are taking certain other medications including warfarin, low-dose aspirin, clopidogrel, phenytoin, carbamazepine, or valproate (confirm with trial site for the full list)
