Who might be able to join this trial:

PFO Group (people with a hole between the upper chambers of the heart, called a patent foramen ovale):

  • People between 18 and 65 years old
  • People who have a confirmed PFO with a medium-to-large amount of blood flowing through the opening (detected by a specialised ultrasound test)
  • People who have had a stroke caused by a blood clot, or a mini-stroke (TIA), within the past 6 months, with no other explanation found for why it happened
  • People who have had migraines for more than one year, with no other explanation found
  • People who have no symptoms but were found to have a PFO by chance, and who either take part in high-risk activities (such as those that involve frequent straining or breath-holding, or activities that increase the risk of gas bubbles in the blood) or have certain features of the heart structure that are considered higher risk (confirm with trial site)

ASD Group (people with a different type of hole in the heart, called an atrial septal defect):

  • People between 18 and 65 years old
  • People who have a specific type and size of ASD (a "secundum" type, measuring 10 to 20 mm, with enough surrounding tissue in the right areas)
  • People whose heart pressure and blood flow measurements fall within specific ranges, as assessed by a specialised heart test (confirm with trial site for exact values)

Who may not be able to join:

PFO Group:

  • People who have any known vascular risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation, a history of smoking, or obesity
  • People who have had a stroke or mini-stroke within the past one month
  • People who have had blood clots in the deep veins or in the lungs
  • People who have coronary artery disease or blockages in the arteries in the neck
  • People who have other structural heart problems or heart conditions
  • People who are allergic to contrast dye (used in certain medical imaging tests)
  • People who do not wish to take part

ASD Group:

  • People who have any known vascular risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, a history of smoking, or obesity
  • People who have other heart abnormalities or conditions alongside the ASD
  • People whose heart pressure or blood vessel resistance measurements are above certain levels (confirm with trial site for exact values)
  • People whose ASD is of a different type (primum or sinus venosus type)
  • People who have blood clots inside the heart, a permanent reason they cannot take blood-thinning medication, or an allergy to nickel
