Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have difficulty swallowing because of a cancerous blockage in the food pipe (esophagus) or where the food pipe meets the stomach, including blockages caused by a tumour pressing from outside, or cancer that has come back after previous food pipe surgery
- People whose difficulty swallowing is moderate to severe (rated using a standard swallowing scale called the Ogilvie score)
- People with a life expectancy of less than 12 months
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who are able and willing to provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a narrowing in the food pipe related to removal of the voice box (laryngectomy)
- People whose blockage is located less than 2 cm away from the top of the food pipe (the upper esophageal sphincter)
- People whose tumour spans more than 14 cm in length
- People who have previously had a stent (a small tube used to hold the passage open) placed for the same condition
- People who have a blood-clotting problem that has not been corrected before the procedure
- People who have a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis (a specific inflammation of the food pipe) or a disorder affecting how the food pipe moves food
- People who have an allergy to a metal called Nitinol (nickel titanium), which is used in the stent device
