Who might be able to join this trial:

For stroke patients:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • People who have had their first-ever stroke (either a blocked blood vessel or a bleed in the brain) affecting one side of the brain or the brainstem
  • People who have weakness in one arm as a result of their stroke, measured at a specific level using a standard arm strength test (confirm with trial site for exact score range)
  • People who are between 3 and 6 weeks after their stroke when joining the trial
  • People who have given their signed agreement to take part

For healthy volunteers:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • People with normal arm and hand movement, confirmed by a standard strength test
  • People who have given their signed agreement to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with serious medical conditions such as severe heart disease, severe head injury, or severe mental illness
  • People with significant difficulties with communication, memory, or understanding that could affect their ability to take part, as assessed by their treating doctor
  • People with medical reasons that prevent them from safely having brain stimulation (TMS) or MRI scans — for example, certain metal implants in the body, a history of epilepsy, significant alcohol or drug use in the 6 months before the study, or pregnancy
  • People whose life expectancy is less than one year
  • People who had weakness in their arm before their stroke occurred
