Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You have had a stroke that affected one side of the brain (not the lower part of the brain)
  • Your stroke happened more than 6 months ago
  • You have some ability to move your arm and hand on the affected side (based on a standard assessment score)
  • You are not currently receiving any rehabilitation treatment

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have significant muscle stiffness (spasticity) in your affected arm
  • You have major problems with feeling/sensation in your affected arm (such as reduced ability to feel touch or vibration)
  • You have difficulty noticing things on one side of your visual space (called hemineglect)
  • You have difficulty planning or carrying out movements even when muscles work normally (called apraxia)
  • You have a neurological condition other than your stroke
  • You have bone, joint, or muscle problems in your affected arm
  • You have significant difficulties with memory or thinking (based on a short screening test)
  • You have significant pain in your affected arm (a pain score of 6 or higher out of 10)
  • Your brain does not show a certain type of electrical response during a brain stimulation test (confirm with trial site)
  • You have any conditions that make certain types of brain stimulation or tongue stimulation unsafe for you (confirm with trial site)

Change in UL motor function on the Fugl-Meyer Stroke Assessment Scale; Change in UL functional performance on the Wolf Motor Function Test; Change in motor cortex excitability by means of resting MEP amplitudes elicited by TMS over both hemispheres.
