Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD):
- People who are able to give written consent to participate
- People aged between 50 and 85 years old
- People diagnosed with PAD at a stage where walking causes leg pain (known as Fontaine stage II or III)
- Women who have been through menopause, meaning their periods stopped more than 24 months ago
- People who experience leg pain or cramping during exercise (claudication)
- People whose PAD has not progressed to open wounds, gangrene, or tissue death on the foot
For healthy comparison (control) participants:
- People who are able to give written consent to participate
- People aged between 50 and 85 years old
- People with no signs of blocked blood flow in the legs, confirmed by a standard circulation test result above 0.90
- Women who have been through menopause, meaning their periods stopped more than 24 months ago
Who may not be able to join:
For people with PAD:
- People whose PAD causes pain while resting or has led to tissue loss (Fontaine stage IV)
- People who have recently had a sudden blockage or injury affecting blood flow in the lower leg
- People whose ability to walk is limited by a condition other than PAD
- People who have not had a physical examination to assess their exercise capacity within the past year
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have kidney disease or type II diabetes
For healthy comparison (control) participants:
- People who have been diagnosed with PAD
- People whose most recent physical exam (at least one year before the study) showed any limitations to exercise
- People who have not had a physical examination to assess their exercise capacity within the past year
- People whose ability to walk is limited due to a musculoskeletal injury
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have kidney disease or type II diabetes
