Who might be able to join this trial:

• People between 30 and 90 years of age
• People who have been diagnosed with vasodilatory shock, which is dangerously low blood pressure caused by blood vessels widening, with no other clear cause identified
• People who have been diagnosed with a serious lung condition called Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), where oxygen levels in the blood are very low and significant breathing support is needed
• People who are on a mechanical ventilator (a machine that breathes for them) and are either in a deep medically induced sleep or have been given medication to stop muscle movement

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have an irregular heartbeat, including a condition called atrial fibrillation
• People who have a chest drain tube in place, or who have, or are at risk of, dangerously raised pressure inside the abdomen
• People who have structural problems with their heart, including high blood pressure in the lungs (a condition called pulmonary hypertension) or heart failure
• People who are receiving advanced life support machines such as ECMO (a machine that does the work of the heart and lungs), CRRT (a kidney filtering machine), or mechanical heart support devices
• People who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with significantly reduced lung function measured before this illness (confirm with trial site)
• People who have severe narrowing or hardening of the arteries throughout the body
