Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had their first stroke on one side of the brain (either a bleed or a blockage), starting from 24 hours after being admitted to hospital up to one month after the stroke occurred
- People who have weakness or paralysis on one side of the body as a result of their stroke
- People whose muscle strength in the affected limb is very low or absent, based on a standard strength test (scored 0 to 2 out of 5)
- People aged between 30 and 85 years old
- People who have ankle problems on the affected side, such as tight calf muscles and/or difficulty lifting the foot upward
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose medical condition is not currently stable
- People who have another serious illness at the same time that would prevent them from participating in physical training or exercise
- People who have no ankle problems, or only very mild ankle problems, on the affected side
- People with serious heart or circulation problems that would prevent them from doing moderate movement exercises
- People who have difficulty thinking clearly or understanding and following spoken or written instructions
- People experiencing severe pain in their legs
- People whose ankle is severely stiff and stuck in a downward-pointed position (more than 15 degrees, when a doctor or therapist tries to move it upward) (confirm with trial site)
- People who have pressure sores, a recent surgical wound, or open skin sores or wounds below the knee
