Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older (any gender)
  • You have signed an informed consent form agreeing to take part
  • You are well enough to carry out basic daily activities (rated 0–2 on a standard activity scale used by doctors)
  • You have been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, confirmed either by tissue biopsy or medical imaging
  • Your cancer has come back in the same area after surgery or combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment aimed at curing it, OR your advanced esophageal cancer has continued to grow in the same area after one or two rounds of previous treatment
  • Your cancer is at a stage that is considered regional (has not spread widely throughout the body), based on standard cancer staging guidelines (confirm with trial site)
  • Your cancer can be measured or assessed using scans or imaging
  • You are expected to live for at least 3 months
  • Your blood counts are within acceptable ranges — including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (confirm exact values with trial site)
  • Your liver and kidney function tests are within acceptable ranges (confirm exact values with trial site)
  • If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you must have had a negative pregnancy test within 7 days before starting treatment
  • You and your partner must use adequate contraception throughout the treatment and for 4 weeks after it ends
  • You do not have serious problems with your blood-forming system, heart, hormones, or immune system
  • You do not have any other serious medical condition rated grade 3 or above (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are under 18 years old, or your general health and activity level is rated above 2 on the doctor's activity scale
  • Your esophageal cancer has not been confirmed by a tissue biopsy or imaging scan
  • You have already had additional ("salvage") surgery after your cancer came back
  • You have an active autoimmune disease (such as autoimmune hepatitis, lung inflammation, eye inflammation, bowel inflammation, thyroid overactivity, or certain types of kidney or blood vessel disease); note that childhood asthma that is fully resolved may be acceptable — confirm with trial site
  • You are currently taking immunosuppressant medications or steroid medications (above a certain dose) and have used them within the past 2 weeks
  • You have serious uncontrolled health conditions such as very high blood pressure, heart disease (including heart attack or irregular heartbeat), severe active infection, advanced liver disease, active Hepatitis B, or active Hepatitis C
  • You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
  • You have a history of substance abuse involving psychotropic (mind-altering) drugs that you are unable to stop, or you have a diagnosed mental health disorder
  • You have taken part in another clinical drug trial within the past 4 weeks
  • You or your family members have refused to take part in the study
