Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had an ischemic stroke (caused by a blockage) or a hemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding), confirmed by a CT or MRI scan
- People who are at least 6 months past their stroke and are in the long-term (chronic) recovery phase
- People whose stroke affected only one side of the brain
- People aged 18 years or older
- People with moderate to severe weakness on one side of the body, based on a specific arm movement assessment score of 45 or below (FMA-UE scale)
- People who have full passive range of movement in the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand (meaning these joints can be moved through their full range by someone else, even if the person cannot do it themselves)
- People with enough cognitive (thinking) ability to understand and follow instructions and complete study tasks
- People who wish to take part in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People with other neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, or dementia
- People with a neurological or joint/muscle condition that directly affects the arm, such as dystonia or severe muscle stiffness (spasticity above a score of 3 on the modified Ashworth scale in the elbow, wrist, or fingers)
- People who cannot have an MRI scan, for example due to having an implanted device such as a pacemaker, or due to claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), or other MRI-related reasons
- People with significant cognitive (thinking) difficulties, based on a cognitive assessment score below 20 on the MoCA test
- People with severe difficulty communicating due to aphasia (a language impairment caused by the stroke)
- People with severe psychiatric (mental health) conditions
- People who have had more than one stroke
