Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are able to give informed consent to participate
• People who have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC) for more than 3 months
• People whose UC has affected at least 15 cm of the colon, as confirmed by a colonoscopy
• People whose disease is currently active, shown by a stool test result (calprotectin) above 200
• People who are currently taking mesalamine or sulfasalazine for their UC
• People who also have a liver condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) may still be eligible (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

• People with uncontrolled high blood pressure (systolic above 140 or diastolic above 90)
• People with significant kidney disease, where the kidneys are not filtering blood well enough (GFR below 55 mL/min)
• People with reduced liver function, unless the cause is PSC
• People with a current bowel infection caused by a bacteria called Clostridioides difficile (a negative test within the past month is acceptable)
• People with a bowel infection or colitis caused by an infection or a medication
• People diagnosed with Crohn's disease or a form of colitis that is uncertain or unclassified
• People with severe, advanced liver disease
• People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• People who are using rectal treatments (such as suppositories or enemas) for their condition
• People who have been diagnosed with cancer within the past 5 years
• People with immune system conditions, either present from birth or developed later in life
• People with diabetes or systemic lupus
• People for whom surgery to remove the colon is considered likely within the next 2 months
• People who have taken part in another treatment clinical trial in the past 30 days, or who are currently in another trial
• People with a history of, or known risk factors for, heart conditions including irregular heartbeat, long QT syndrome, heart failure, stroke, or coronary artery disease
• People who have taken certain medications recently, including Vitamin C, prednisone, immune-suppressing drugs (such as azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, tacrolimus, cyclosporine, and others), or biologic or advanced therapies (such as anti-TNF agents, vedolizumab, ustekinumab, risankizumab, mirikizumab, tofacitinib, upadacitinib, or etrasimod) within the past 6 weeks
