Who might be able to join this trial:

• The cancer has been confirmed by a tissue sample (biopsy) as squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, with no other cancer cell types present.
• The cancer is located in the chest portion of the esophagus.
• No previous cancer treatment of any kind has been received, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.
• The cancer is locally advanced and considered on the borderline of being removable by surgery — specifically, doctors have assessed it as possibly (but not confirmed) growing into nearby structures, or involving lymph nodes with spread beyond their outer covering, based on a standard cancer staging system (AJCC 8th edition).
• General health and ability to function is at an acceptable level, as measured by a standard medical scoring tool (a score of 70 or above on the Karnofsky Performance Scale).
• Blood tests show that the heart, liver, kidneys, and blood cell counts are all within acceptable ranges as defined by the trial.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have, or have had, another separate cancer — particularly in the mouth, throat, or airway — unless it was a fully cured skin cancer (basal cell type) or a very early-stage cervical condition (carcinoma in situ).
• People who have already received any form of cancer treatment.
• People whose cancer has already spread to distant parts of the body, including lymph nodes above the collarbone, based on AJCC 8th edition staging.
• People where doctors have assessed that the cancer is very close to major blood vessels in a way that creates a high risk of serious bleeding.
• People where doctors consider there to be a significant risk of the esophagus developing a hole (perforation) during treatment.
• People with active infections, including tuberculosis, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C.
• People with known allergies to any of the cancer medicines used in the trial, including immunotherapy (anti-PD-1) or chemotherapy drugs.
• People with heart or lung problems serious enough that doctors determine they could not safely tolerate the treatment or surgery involved in the trial.
• Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or of childbearing age without reliable contraception in place.
• People who do not meet the inclusion criteria as assessed by the trial investigators.
