Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with Crohn's disease (CD):
- You are between 19 and 80 years old.
- Your Crohn's disease affects the lower part of the small bowel and/or the colon, in a way that can be examined by a colonoscopy.
- You are already scheduled for a colonoscopy as part of your normal medical care.
- Your disease can be either currently active or in a quiet/inactive phase.
For people without inflammatory bowel disease (used as a comparison group):
- You are between 19 and 80 years old.
- You are already scheduled for a colonoscopy as part of routine colorectal cancer screening.
Who may not be able to join:
For people with Crohn's disease:
- You have active Crohn's disease around the anal area, such as an actively draining fistula or a collection of fluid shown on an MRI scan.
- Your Crohn's disease only affects the upper part of the small bowel or upper digestive tract, which cannot be reached by a colonoscopy.
- You have had your entire colon or rectum surgically removed.
- You have had a pouch surgically created as part of bowel surgery.
- You have been diagnosed with Short Bowel Syndrome.
- You have taken antibiotics for any reason in the last 2 months.
- You have had a stomach bug (gastroenteritis) or travelled outside of Canada or the United States in the last month.
- You were found to have colorectal cancer, high-grade abnormal cells, or a large polyp (2cm or bigger) during your colonoscopy at the start of the study.
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have had bowel surgery in the last 4 months.
- You have a liver condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis.
For people in the comparison group (no IBD):
- Signs of inflammation were found in your bowel during the colonoscopy.
- A close family member (parent, sibling, or child) has been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.
- You have taken antibiotics for any reason in the last 2 months.
- You have had a stomach bug (gastroenteritis) or travelled outside of Canada or the United States in the last month.
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have previously had any bowel surgery.
