Who might be able to join this trial:
For the person who had a stroke:
- Has been diagnosed with an acute ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel)
- Shows some level of difficulty with thinking or memory skills, based on a screening questionnaire
- Does not have severe difficulty with speaking or understanding language
- Did not have dementia before the stroke (based on self-report)
- Does not currently have a major anxiety or depressive disorder, based on standardised questionnaires
- Has not misused drugs or alcohol in the 3 months before joining the study, based on standardised questionnaires
- Is older than 40 years of age
- Has a blood relative who also meets the criteria to participate as a family member
- For those in the brain stimulation part of the trial: is not pregnant, has no metal implants in the skull, has no skin sores at the areas where stimulation would be applied, does not have severe heart, lung, kidney, or liver disease, does not have a pacemaker, and has no other medical reason that would prevent participation in MRI or brain stimulation (confirm with trial site)
For the participating family member:
- Is at least 18 years of age
- Is a biological (blood) relative of the person who had the stroke
- Does not have dementia (based on self-report)
- Does not currently have a major anxiety or depressive disorder, based on standardised questionnaires
- Has not misused drugs or alcohol in the 3 months before joining the study, based on standardised questionnaires
- Has a sibling or parent who has had an ischemic stroke
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not speak, read, and understand English
- People who do not have access to video-conferencing software on a computer or smart device
