Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been clinically diagnosed with chronic knee osteoarthritis
  • People between the ages of 40 and 90 years old
  • People who are about to start physical therapy for knee osteoarthritis (with a first appointment coming up within the next month, or who had their first physical therapy visit within the last 7 days)
  • To be fully enrolled: people whose physical therapist determines they can safely and reliably take part in ongoing exercise
  • To be fully enrolled: people who have completed at least 4 physical therapy appointments (either in-person or virtual)
  • To be fully enrolled: people who have been syncing their Fitbit device at least once a month

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who do not have a smartphone that works with the trial's digital platform
  • People who are unable to walk 2 blocks without assistance
  • People who have poorly controlled gout or other types of inflammatory arthritis
  • People whose treating doctor or study team believes their life expectancy is less than 1 year
  • People whose treating doctor or study team determines that certain serious health conditions — such as severe heart failure, unstable chest pain, advanced kidney disease, or severe lung disease — may make exercise unsafe or difficult to participate in (confirm with trial site)
  • People who have severe pain in a part of the body other than the knee that limits their daily activities
  • People who do not speak English or have significant difficulty reading, which would limit their ability to interact with text messages
  • People who are currently pregnant
  • People who are receiving physical therapy outside of the VA health system
