Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with aphasia (difficulty speaking or understanding language) after a stroke, where the stroke affected the left side of the brain, and it was their first stroke, affecting only one side of the brain.
- People between 25 and 75 years old, whose stroke happened at least 1 month ago, of any gender.
- People who are right-handed (as confirmed by a standard handedness questionnaire) and who have completed at least a primary/elementary school level of education.
- People who have retained basic thinking skills such as attention, memory, and the ability to understand visual information (as measured by a non-language cognitive test).
- People whose aphasia has been confirmed by a standard speech and language assessment called the Western Aphasia Battery.
- People who can understand spoken or heard language to some degree and are able to participate in assessments lasting between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
- People (and their legal guardian, where applicable) who have read, understood, and signed a consent form agreeing to take part in the study.
Who may not be able to join:
- People with moderate to severe difficulty controlling the muscles used for speech (assessed using a standard scale).
- People with severe difficulty planning or coordinating the movements needed for speech or facial movements.
- People with significant anxiety or moderate to severe depression (as measured by standard assessment scales).
- People who had a speech or language disorder before their stroke occurred.
- People with serious conditions affecting major organs, such as heart or lung disease, that would make rehabilitation treatment unsafe, or people with active infectious diseases.
- People with significant sleep disorders or mental health conditions.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan, for example due to metal implants or electronic devices inside the body.
