Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 50 or older
- People with a body mass index (a measure of weight relative to height) of 40 or below
- People who self-identify as Black, including African American
- People who have had knee pain rated at least 4 out of 10 on average over the past week
- People who have scored 5 or more on a standard depression questionnaire (PHQ-9) and/or a standard anxiety questionnaire (GAD-7)
- People who can speak and understand English well enough to follow study instructions and sign a consent form
- People who are available for the full length of the study
- People who are able to attend sessions held remotely (such as by video or phone)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a knee, hip, or ankle replacement
- People who have had a steroid or hyaluronic acid injection into the knee within the past 3 months
- People who have had knee surgery within the past 6 months
- People who are currently receiving, or have received within the past 3 months, physical therapy for knee osteoarthritis
- People who are currently receiving, or have received within the past 3 months, any non-medication mental health treatment
- People who are planning to start physical therapy for joint or lower back pain within the next 3 months
- People who are planning to start any non-medication mental health treatment within the next month
- People with inflammatory arthritis conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
- People with neurological conditions such as stroke or Parkinson's disease
- People for whom starting an exercise program would not be medically safe (confirm with trial site)
- People with suspected substance abuse issues
- People who are not able to give informed consent on their own behalf
- People who are pregnant
- People already taking part in another clinical trial for joint or muscle pain
- People planning to have a major surgery within the next 6 months
- People experiencing high-risk mental health symptoms, including active suicidal thoughts, bipolar disorder, mania, psychosis, or schizophrenia
- People currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer, except for non-melanoma skin cancer
