Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 65 years old or older.
  • You are able to walk without pain and without using any walking aids (such as a cane or walker).
  • You can speak and read English.
  • You are healthy enough to do moderate-intensity exercise, with or without a doctor's approval.
  • You will be living in your own community (not in a care facility) for the entire duration of the study.
  • You have a reliable way to get to where the study takes place.

  • You are currently not very active — meaning you do less than 60 minutes per week of moderate exercise and have not done any strength training in the past 3 months.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have been diagnosed with a neurological condition, such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, or have had a stroke.
  • You have a known health condition that makes exercise unsafe, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, serious joint problems, diabetes, or other metabolic conditions.
  • You are currently receiving treatment for cancer.
  • You have had a stroke or nerve-related health problem in the past 6 months.
  • You have had a hip, knee, or spinal fracture or surgery in the past 6 months.
  • You are unwilling or unable to attend the exercise classes that are part of the study.
  • You are already taking part in another research study related to physical activity or fitness.
  • You are currently taking medication for memory or thinking problems.
  • You regularly drink more than 14 alcoholic drinks per week or currently use illegal drugs.
  • Your memory or thinking difficulties meet the level considered to be a clinical impairment (confirm with trial site).
  • You meet the criteria for clinical depression (confirm with trial site).
  • You have hearing or vision problems that have not been corrected (for example, with glasses or hearing aids).
  • You are unable to understand what the study involves.
  • Another person in your household is already participating in this study.
