Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are admitted to hospital under the care of a specialist brain and nervous system intensive care doctor, either as their main doctor or as a consulting doctor.
- People who have had at least one CT scan of the head showing a brain condition that could cause dangerous swelling or pressure inside the skull — such as a traumatic brain injury, stroke, bleeding in or around the brain, lack of oxygen to the brain, swelling from metabolic causes, or a brain tumour.
- People whose doctors have concerns that they may develop life-threatening pressure or swelling in the brain.
- People with a Glasgow Coma Score below 9, which is a medical measure indicating a significantly reduced level of consciousness (confirm with trial site).
- People who are expected to remain in hospital for more than 24 hours.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are receiving comfort or end-of-life care only, rather than active treatment.
- People whom the principal investigator (the lead researcher) determines are not suitable for the study for any other reason.
- People with an injury to the eye socket area, as this would affect certain non-invasive measurements used in the trial.
- People with an injury or prior surgery that would prevent a specific monitoring device (called the B4C device) from being used on them.
- People who have had a surgical opening in the skull that has not fully healed, or who have bone defects or scalp injuries in that area, as this would affect certain brain monitoring tools used in the trial.
- People with extensive injury to the scalp.
