Who might be able to join this trial:
- Premature babies born before 34 weeks of pregnancy who had breathing difficulties at birth and are now recovering, and are currently on a breathing machine (either conventional mechanical ventilation or a type called high-frequency jet ventilation)
- Babies who are older than 7 days but younger than 1 month of age at the time of joining the trial
- Babies born at a pregnancy stage of between 21 and 34 weeks
- Babies whose parent or legal guardian has given written permission for them to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- Babies who have a confirmed blood infection (sepsis shown by a positive blood culture)
- Babies born with physical conditions affecting how their lungs or airways work
- Babies with certain types of serious heart conditions present from birth (cyanotic or ductal-dependent congenital heart disease)
- Babies whose medical team considers them too unwell or unstable to safely take part in the trial
- Babies who need medications to keep their heart pumping properly, or who are receiving steroids to support heart function
- Babies who are on non-invasive breathing support (such as a mask or nasal prongs), or babies who have a serious chronic lung condition (bronchopulmonary dysplasia) combined with high blood pressure in the lungs
- Babies who have open skin wounds or sores on their chest

Change in cardiac index with increase/decrease in PEEP as measured by ECHO and EIT; PEEP of best compliance and best oxygenation as per EIT measurements
