Who might be able to join this trial:
For people without an acute (sudden) stroke (Control and Control Surgery groups):
- People who have either never had a stroke, or who had a stroke at least 1 year ago
- People who have signed a consent form agreeing to take part
For people currently experiencing an acute (sudden) stroke (Stroke groups):
- People admitted to hospital with a strong suspicion of an acute ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel)
- People whose stroke symptoms began no more than 12 hours before
- People for whom consent has been obtained in line with emergency research regulations (as the person may not be able to consent themselves)
- People whose ischemic stroke is later confirmed by medical assessment
Who may not be able to join:
All groups:
- People who are pregnant
- People under 18 years of age
Stroke group receiving no treatment:
- People who received clot-dissolving medication (IVT) or a mechanical clot removal procedure (MT)
Stroke group receiving clot-dissolving medication (IVT):
- People who received a mechanical clot removal procedure (MT), or who did not receive clot-dissolving medication (IVT)
Stroke group receiving mechanical clot removal (MT):
- People who did not receive a mechanical clot removal procedure (MT)
