Who might be able to join this trial:
Post-Stroke Group:
- People who have had a single stroke on one side of the brain that caused weakness in one leg, with the stroke happening more than 6 months ago
- People who are able to walk as part of their everyday life
- People aged between 18 and 80
Healthy Comparison Group:
- People with no history of stroke, cerebral palsy, or injury or surgery to a leg
- People who are not currently taking any medication that affects the brain or nervous system
- People who are able to walk as part of their everyday life
- People aged between 18 and 80
Who may not be able to join:
- People with serious ongoing medical conditions, such as unhealed pressure sores, active or untreated infections, blood clot disorders, severe joint tightening, brittle bones, bone growths in soft tissue, a broken leg bone, severe lung disease, unstable heart conditions, uncontrolled seizures, or uncontrolled diabetes
- People with a history of any other neurological condition or brain/nerve injury (for the post-stroke group, this means any condition beyond the single stroke)
- People who have had a Botox injection in a leg within the last 4 months
- People with any thinking or memory difficulties that would prevent them from giving informed consent or completing the study tasks
- People with a history of previous injury or surgery to the hip or knee
- People with significant swelling in the legs
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker or any other electrically implanted device
- People who wear back or spinal braces (such as a TLSO or HALO brace) that would prevent proper fitting of the study equipment
- People who weigh more than 300 pounds (approximately 136 kilograms)
- People who are unable to consent for themselves, those under 18, pregnant women, and prisoners
- People with clinically significant depression, psychiatric disorders, or ongoing drug or substance misuse
- People currently taking medications known to increase or decrease the activity of the brain's movement-related systems (for example, amphetamines)
- People who have had a concussion within the last 6 months
- People who experience unexplained headaches
