Who might be able to join this trial:

If you are a healthy middle-aged or older adult (Part 1):

• You are between 40 and 80 years old
• Your memory and thinking abilities are within the normal range (as measured by a standard cognitive test)
• Your ankle strength and flexibility meet normal levels in both upward and downward foot movement
• Your vision (both near and far) meets the required levels, with or without glasses or contacts

If you have had a stroke (Part 2):

• You are between 40 and 80 years old
• Your memory and thinking abilities are within the normal range
• You had your first-ever stroke at least 3 months ago, and it affected only one side of the brain in the deeper brain regions
• You have weakness or partial paralysis on one side of your body as a result of the stroke
• You do not have difficulty perceiving or paying attention to one side of your surroundings
• Your affected ankle can move at least a small amount up and down on its own
• You do not have severe muscle stiffness or tightening in the affected leg
• Your disability is considered mild to moderate
• You are able to walk on your own or with someone nearby watching, without needing a walking aid
• Your vision (both near and far) meets the required levels, with or without glasses or contacts

Who may not be able to join:

• You have any reason why having an MRI scan or a type of mild brain stimulation (called tDCS) would not be safe for you
• You have a serious or poorly controlled ongoing illness
• You have a history of certain brain or nerve conditions such as epilepsy, meningitis, brain tumors, or brain surgery (for stroke patients, this excludes their stroke history but still includes these other conditions)
• You have severe muscle or joint problems affecting your leg movement (for stroke patients, this applies to the unaffected leg)
• You have problems with visual-spatial perception or significant hearing loss
• You are color blind
• You have depression or other mental health conditions
• You are taking any medication that affects how your brain works
• You have an addiction to drugs, substances, or alcohol
• You are currently taking part in another study involving brain stimulation
• A doctor has decided, after assessment, that MRI or tDCS would not be appropriate for you
• You work for or are affiliated with a research institution involved in conducting this study
