Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You have agreed to take part and signed a consent form
- You are currently on a breathing machine (ventilator) through a tube placed in your throat
- The reason you needed the breathing tube was due to a severe flare-up of asthma or COPD
- You have been on the breathing machine for 72 hours or less
Who may not be able to join:
- You produce very large amounts of mucus that requires suctioning more than 5 times per nurse shift
- You have a collapsed lung that has not yet been treated with a drain
- Your blood pressure is dangerously low and is not improving with fluids or blood pressure medications, or you require very high doses of blood pressure medication
- You have high or unstable pressure inside your skull that requires increasing levels of treatment to control
- The breathing tube in your throat has a very narrow inner diameter (6mm or less)
- Your care team is planning to move toward end-of-life or comfort-focused care
- You are unable to have a special monitoring belt (called an EIT belt) fitted around your chest, for example due to: your chest size not fitting the belt, wounds, bandages or chest deformities, recent chest surgery within the last 7 days (including lung removal or transplant), having an implanted heart device (ICD), or having significant air trapped under the skin on your chest
- You are unable to have a thin tube passed through your nose into your stomach, for example due to: recent surgery on your food pipe, previous removal of your food pipe, known swollen veins in your food pipe, or serious bleeding disorders
