People with ALS:
- People diagnosed with ALS or probable ALS (based on recognised diagnostic guidelines called the El Escorial Criteria), whether they are able to walk or are in hospital
- People who are able to give their own informed consent to participate
People with a peripheral neuromuscular disease:

- People who are similar in age and gender to the ALS patients in the trial and who are able to give their own informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
All participants:
- People who have another serious medical, neurological, or psychiatric condition
- People whose vision is impaired to a degree that would interfere with completing the trial tasks
- People with severe physical or cognitive difficulties that would prevent them from completing the trial tasks
- People whose use of alcohol or drugs would interfere with completing the trial tasks
People with a peripheral neuromuscular disease:
- People who have a family history that increases their risk of developing ALS (confirm with trial site)
Healthy volunteers:
- People who have a close family member (such as a parent, sibling, or child) with ALS
- People who take medications that affect the brain or central nervous system, such as antidepressants
