- People who currently have cancer anywhere in the digestive tract
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial
- People who have previously had surgery for ulcerative colitis, or who are likely to need such surgery
- People who have previously had a nerve stimulation device implanted, or who have taken part in a nerve stimulation trial before
- People who are unable to operate the patient control device provided as part of the study
