Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older.
- People having a full mastectomy (with or without lymph node surgery or reconstructive surgery) at UCMC, either for breast cancer or due to a high risk of developing breast cancer — this includes people with pre-cancerous breast changes, certain genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 or BRCA2), or a strong family history of breast cancer, as determined by the study doctor.
Who may not be able to join:
- People having only a partial mastectomy (lumpectomy) or reconstruction using their own body tissue.
- People who do not speak English.
- People who are pregnant.
- People who have an allergy to local anaesthetics — though people whose allergy is only to topical (surface-applied) anaesthetics may still be considered.
- People who have an existing pain condition and have been prescribed opioid pain medications within 30 days before surgery — though people who have not filled or taken that prescription may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the study doctor.
- People with a history of opioid use disorder.
- People who are unable to give informed consent to participate.
- People the study doctor considers unsuitable for participation for any other reason, such as concerns about being able to attend follow-up appointments.
