Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who speak English
- People aged 50 years or older
- People who have been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis confirmed by X-ray at a grade 2 or higher, within the past 2 years
- People who experience knee pain on at least 15 days per month
- People whose worst daily pain has averaged a score of 3 out of 10 or higher over a two-week period
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a medical reason that prevents them from taking anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), such as: a heart bypass, heart attack, coronary stent, or stroke in the past 6 months; a certain type of heart failure with reduced pumping function; advanced kidney disease (stage 4 or higher); a severe stomach bleed or ulcer in the past 6 months; current pregnancy; liver cirrhosis; currently taking blood thinners (note: low-dose aspirin of 81mg daily is generally acceptable); a known allergy to anti-inflammatory medications or aspirin; or any other medical reason a doctor determines prevents the use of anti-inflammatory gel or cream
- People who have an inflammatory form of arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis)
- People who have had a partial or full knee replacement in the knee being studied
- People who have had a therapeutic injection into the knee being studied within the past 12 weeks
- People who have knee or lower limb surgery planned during the two-month study period
- People who are currently receiving cancer treatment, whose cancer is not in remission, or whose life expectancy is less than 6 months
- People who are unable to give informed consent, for example due to dementia
- People who are currently using anti-inflammatory gel, cream, or tablets more than 3 days per week
- People who are unable to receive text messages or emails to complete questionnaires between study visits
- People who would be unable to follow the study protocol (confirm with trial site)
