Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been clinically diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hip
- People aged between 45 and 80 years old
- People who have X-ray findings showing moderate to advanced knee or hip OA (based on a standard scoring system called Kellgren & Lawrence, score of 2 or higher), OR people who have had knee or hip OA symptoms for at least 2 years
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are already on a waiting list for a first-time hip or knee replacement surgery, for any reason
- People for whom hip or knee replacement surgery would never be a future option, due to any absolute medical reason
- People who have already had more than one previous hip or knee replacement
- People with another known medical condition that affects the joints
- People with known widespread pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia
- People with kidney problems, shown by specific blood test results above certain levels (confirm with trial site)
- People with liver problems, shown by a specific liver enzyme blood test result above a certain level (confirm with trial site)
- People with blood disorders
- People who are considered highly frail (rated 7 or above on a standard frailty scale) or who have a life expectancy of less than 5 years
- People with nerve inflammation, muscle inflammation, or a known significant sensitivity to statin medications
- People currently taking colchicine for another medical condition
- People who have a known intolerance to colchicine
- People currently taking certain medications, including some antibiotics (such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or azithromycin), some antifungal medicines, certain HIV medications, some heart rhythm medications (such as verapamil or diltiazem), or immunosuppressant drugs such as cyclosporine (confirm with trial site if unsure about current medications)
- People who are currently enrolled in another clinical trial
- People who are unable to make decisions for themselves
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who are female and capable of becoming pregnant but are not using adequate contraception
- Male participants who are unwilling to use effective contraception during the study to prevent pregnancy
