Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or another primary psychotic disorder, based on standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5).
- You are between 18 and 55 years old.
- Your symptoms score at least 60 on a standard psychiatric rating scale called the PANSS, which means your symptoms are at a moderate-to-severe level (confirm with trial site).
- You are willing and able to give your informed consent to take part.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a serious physical health condition alongside your mental health condition.
- You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study.
- You have had a problem with drug or alcohol misuse or dependence in the past three months.
- You have a history of a significant brain injury, based on a screening score of 7 or above on a specific scale (confirm with trial site).
- You have previously not responded well to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or a similar brain stimulation treatment called MST.
- You are showing signs of dementia, or you have a significant neurological condition such as a brain aneurysm or anything that may cause increased pressure inside the skull.
- You have a medical condition, are taking a medication, or have abnormal lab results that a doctor believes could be causing psychotic symptoms or serious thinking/memory problems (for example, certain thyroid or hormonal conditions).
- You have a metal implant inside or near your head, such as a brain stimulator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, or shunt, or any other metal object near the head that cannot be safely removed.
- You score 18 or higher on a standard depression rating scale called the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D).
- You need immediate ECT treatment because of urgent or dangerous symptoms such as suicidal thoughts, being unresponsive, or severe agitation.
